Check the Importance of Your Business Documentation

  • Are all of your operations documented so that everyone knows how to perform all of the functions that make your business a success?
  • Do you have a current business plan with up-to-date financials, projections, and marketing strategies?
  • Have you reviewed your policy and procedure manual recently and made certain that all of your employees know their rights and privileges AND that they have signed off on their individual review?
  • Have you reviewed your marketing materials recently to ensure that they work in today’s evolving market?

Correct, current, and comprehensive documentation is not only the key to your business success, but it also helps protect the business when there is the threat of litigation. For example,

  • one of your employees is hurt on the job (Workers' Compensation Claim) or,
  • you discharge an employee who then sues you (discriminatory business practices) or,
  • you are required to show your policy and procedure manual after you hire your 26th employee (OSHA requirement), or,
  • you are required to submit your business plan (documentation for additional funding), or you are required to submit your operations manual to a judge (negligence suit).

The process of creating or reviewing your documentation is a very non-threatening way of confirming or reestablishing your business direction, clarifying your objectives, and making certain that you and your employees are working together toward common goals.
